Instructions for Saving Files in Windows

When you download a file from the internet you will first see a dialogue box like this:

dl.gif (11701 bytes)

Make sure that  the Save this file to disk is checked  then press the Ok button. After you click the OK button, you will see a dialogue that looks like this:

dl2.gif (10647 bytes)

Notice that the Save in Location at the top of the Dialogue Box is the Desktop, and   that the filename of the file you are saving in the File Name field   is highlighted. That is the name of the file,  which will be saved  in the Location specified at the top of the box. Depending on where you were when you last saved a file, you may be in this folder on your desktop or on some other folder on your hardrive. To navigate back to your desktop, in case you weren't there in the first place, you use the Save in Dropdown menu to select  the Desktop like this:

The Desktop folder is the top most folder on the list. We suggest that you Place your downloads there, so that you know where they are. Afterwards you can move them to another folder for storage. Once you have selected the desktop folder, click the Save Button. You will see your saved file on your desktop.

If you are feeling more adventurous you can create a new folder on your desktop, ( or anywere ) by using the create new folder button:

When you press the create new folder button you will see a new folder with the name New Folder highlighted in the Main Window.

Type in the name you want for this folder and press enter to name it. Then double click on this folder to open it.   You will then see the contents of this empty folder in the Main Window:

When you press the Save button now, you will save the file to this new folder, which you created on your desktop.

What do I do if I  am not paying attention to what folder I am in when I save a file?

1. You can try to save the file again, and see where the Save in folder is.

2. You can use the Find tool in Windows by pressing the Start Button and pressing Find and Selecting Files or folders. You can also open the Find tool by pressing F3 on your keyboard.

Type in a wildcard search with the extension of the file you are looking for and press find now. Wildcard uses the   *.ext  format where the ext is the filename extension of the file you are looking for. Files you download from the Traderclub Website will have extensions of ela, or zip, or exe.
